Second egg pipping

Here is a second egg pipping this morning:

Do you see the cracking on the left top, in the shadow? It’s hard to tell in a photo, but it forms a somewhat round bump. The duck will push on it and then around the edges, moving gradually in a circle around the top of the egg to cut a circle around the top, and then will push the top of the egg off. To give you an idea how long this process takes, here is the same egg several hours later. And this is going much faster than with the first egg:

However, once out of the egg, they grow with almost supernatural speed. Here is our first duckling, now named Hermione, at a day old:

And here she is being tamed to handling. If the current amount of handling continues, this girl (or boy) is slated to be the world’s tamest duck:
